Eurovision Song Contest 2012 will be televised on BBC 1 this Saturday, 26th May at 8pm but do we stand a ‘cat in hells chance’ of the title?
In the past few years the UK have tried every trick in the book to secure the Eurovision title including entering a well known boy band, an X Factor singer and even an entry from the much loved Andrew Lloyd Webber but all have been in vain.
Well this year we really are sending in the ‘big guns’ in the form of Engelbert Humperdinck who not only has had a successful solo singing career in the UK but also Europe as well. The UK song ’Love Will Set You Free’ is a beautiful catchy ballad and at the great age of 76, Engelbert still has the vocal ability of a man half his age.
Even though we have a great song and a brilliant singer Eurovision odds don’t like our chances of winning Eurovision 2012 with UK Eurovision odds currently standing at 22/1 for the win. These are the longest odds the UK Eurovision entry have had since bookies opened their odds.
Jedward are the Irish Eurovision entry for the second consecutive year and their odds fair slightly better with Irish Eurovision odds standing at 16/1 for the win. Once again Jedward will perform a cheesy pop duet, this time the title is ‘Waterline’.
Top of the Eurovision odds is Sweden with their entry ‘Euphoria’ sang by Loreen. The belting club anthem has given Sweden Eurovision odds of 13/8. Russia Eoruvision odds of 5/1 show them to be the runner up followed by Italy Eurovision odds of 8/1.
As we know, nothing is ever as it seems with the Eurovision Song Contest. Whole countries vote for their neighbours rather than a song so don’t be surprised if the top three are completely different to those predicted in the Eurovision odds. The one thing that probably is a cert is…..no, we don’t stand a cat in hells chance however, as Graham Norton has been asking us for some time, ‘Lets get behind the Hump’.

Eurovision 2012
The 57th annual Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan on the 26th May. 43 countries have entered the Eurovision competition all hoping to be the recipient of the coveted Eurovision Song Contest title.
Last year the United Kingdom Eurovision team in their wisdom went back to entering a well known act to perform their Eurovision entry in the form of boy band Blue. The boys Lee Ryan, Simon Webbe, Duncan James and Antony Costa came in at eleventh place in Dusseldorf with a score of 100 points.
This year, in a bid to claim the Eurovision win, the team are bringing out the big guns, namely Engelbert Humperdinck singing a ballad called ‘Love Will Set You Free‘. Engelbert has had a vast career which started in the early 1950’s where he played saxophone in the nightclubs. After his stint in the National Service Engelbert cut his first record ‘I’ll Never Fall In Love Again’ but it wasn’t until 1967 that he became a household name after releasing his version of ‘Release Me‘.
Over his career, 75 year old Engelbert Humperdinck has become very well known in Europe but will this fact give the United Kingdom a better chance of winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 or will we be receiving ‘nul points’ as in 2003 when Jemini sang ‘Cry Baby’?
Eurovision odds show we have a good chance at being somewhere near the top with odds of 12/1 however it is Sweden who are tipped to be the outright winner with odds of 2/1. Ireland, who once again are using their most annoying twin export Jedward, have odds of 14/1 for the win singing ‘Waterline‘ which, like last year’s ‘Lipstick’ is an upbeat entrant for Ireland.
Lipstick reached 8th place in 2011 so could the boys get a higher placing than our own Engelbert Humperdinck? There’s only one way to find out and that’s to watch the spectacular cheese fest that is Eurovision Song Contest 2012 on 26th May.
