of Russia needs to defend his title this week at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Shanghai China if he is to have any chance of finishing the year ranked inside the world’s top 10.
Davydenko last year won in Shanghai when he beat the world number 1 Rafael Nadal in the final in straight sets.
The Russian then qualified to the ATP Tour world finals at the O2 Arena in November last year and he beat Nadal, Roger Federer and Juan Martin Del Potro in the final in straight sets to win the title.
Davydenko started this year in fine form beating Federer and Nadal once again to win the title in Doha.
Nadal since then however has gone from strength to strength he won the French Open for the 5th time in his career in June and has since won a 2nd Wimbledon title and a 1st US Open title.
