The Austrian made his first ever Grand Slam semi final this summer at the French Open in Paris where he lost in straight sets to the eventual champion Rafael Nadal.
Melzer went on to reach the 4th round of both Wimbledon and the US Open but he lost both in straight sets to the former world number 1 Roger Federer.
Melzer did manage to win his 1st Grand Slam title this summer at Wimbledon when he won the men’s doubles title.
The Austrian has already ensured that he will end the year ranked inside the world’s top 8 in doubles and will therefore compete in the ATP World Tour finals at the O2 Arena in London however he just needs to move up a few places in singles to be the first man to qualify for both events simultaneously .
