Gulbis who was seeded 23rd came into the event a dark horse given his recent form. At the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome Gulbis managed to beat the World Number 1 Roger Federer in 3 tight sets before losing to Nadal in the Semis in 3 hard fought sets.
The following week in Madrid Gulbis managed to reach the Quarter Finals but lost out to Federer in 3 sets.
Federer went on to reach the final but lost to the king of clay Rafael Nadal, the world number 2 from Spain won 6-4 7-6.
Nadal is a 4 time champion at the French Open winning every year between 2005 and 2008 but he lost in the 4th round last year to Robin Soderling of Sweden in 4 sets.
